What’s the difference between coffee grinds?

What type of grind makes the perfect brew? It’s all based on what you want. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Course Grinds: A course grind will generally produce a milder brew. Course grinds should be used for percolated coffee, or with a french press, but never for espresso.
  • Medium Grinds: By far the most popular, medium grinds can be used for most anything, except espresso. A medium grind should be about the size of sand or salt.
  • Fine Grinds: Fine grinds will produce a stronger, fuller brew. Most typically, fine grinds are used for espresso, although they can also be used with a coffee drip or percolator.
  • Turkish Grinds: By far the finest, a turkish grind produces a powder like coffee grinds. Most coffee grinds cannot grind this fine.
